Q&A with Marnie Hill, the author of The Actors' Handbook
How do I get a voice demo made?
Hi Marnie,
Congratulations on the book. It is very comprehensive and a much-needed resource for Australian actors.
I do have a question, though. I want to get a voice demo made. Can you point me in the right direction?
Regards, Jamie B.
Hi Jamie, Thank you for your kind words and question. There'll be a chapter especially for voice artists added to the next edition of the book, but in the meantime here's some information to get you started: There are several studios in each of the major centres and dozens more scattered across the country that produce voice demos for performers. If you can get a hold of a copy of Encore Directory or The Production Book you'll find that most of the studios in Australia are listed in them. Many studios will actually produce demos for you for free and use them to submit you for work. The only downside is that they won't give you copies of the demos. So if you want to take a demo away with you, you'll have to pay for it. If you haven’t done so already, I recommend that you get voice-over training before you make a demo. Many schools will produce a demo for students as part of the course, so if training's in order, that’s another option for you. Either way, the key is to shop around for quality (the demo must be of professional standard). So listen to sample demos produced by the studios or schools before committing to one of them. You shouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a demo, either! I hope this helps. Marnie Hill. posted on 11/11/07
