Extras' snapshots and our top ten tips on taking the best snapshots you can

  • While your snapshots don't need to be taken by a professional, it helps to use a decent camera and have someone who knows a bit about photography take the photographs.
  • Most agents want to see four photographs. Provide them with two close-ups (head and shoulders) and two full-length (head to feet) photographs.
  • Make all of the photographs different (different outfits etc.) Accentuate your type(s) in your appearance(s), but keep things subtle.
  • Do not have anything that is distracting in the background (such as people or noticeable objects). It's best to use a plain or out-of-focus background.
  • Make sure that your photographs are well lit. Unless you have professional lights and know how to use them (do not use flashes), preferably use natural lighting (soft sunlight, not direct – overcast days are good)
  • Make sure the photos are well composed (balanced). Crop them if necessary.
  • The camera should be held at your head height (not taken from up high or down low). Look directly into the camera lens.
  • Keep your facial expressions honest and body gestures natural.
  • Make sure that the photographs are current and look like you. Do not include photographs that may label you unfairly, e.g. holding a beer.
  • Print on photographic paper (snapshot size), not photocopy paper and write your name and phone number on the back of each photograph.
