- Use white A4 paper, black ink and an easy-to-read font (size 10-12).
- Tailor each letter and verify each recipient's name and address.
- Fit it on one page and make sure that it is not too long or too short.
- Write the letter in first person. Be succinct. Be positive. Be realistic.
- Introduce yourself and state your reason for contacting the person.
- Create an opportunity for further correspondence.
- Do not include anything irrelevant in your cover letter and don't lie or exaggerate.
- Keep the tone professional but friendly and inject your personality into the letter. Do not reveal anything too personal about yourself or anything that may be detrimental to your career.
- Edit the letter and check for spelling and grammatical errors.
- Don't forget to include your name and contact information and to date and sign the letter.
